Oppenheimer (Movie Review)
Christopher Nolan has moved far away from his classic style of film making and he has created a fluidic symphony when he made this movie.
The first thing you notice is that 'Oppenheimer' doesn't feel like a movie or even a documentary. Rather one will perceive it like an aria , and why not , with a super gripping but soothing background score and awe inspiring visuals sans CGI and a nippy screenplay , it has to be an aria!
It is not only the story of the atom bomb but somewhat the politics around it. Politics which couldn't cure the anathema hurled towards brilliant minds like Turing and destroyed their lives. Oppenheimer was the modern Prometheus, which is also the opening line of the film , who stole fire from the gods and delivered it to earth and so was condemned forever.
If you come from science, there are overwhelming fanboy moments for you throughout the movie when titans like Niels Bohr , Richard Feynman, Einstein, Enrico Fermi , Heisenberg are brought out at particular intervals as part of the story and not as any side dish.
The story is about the repentance of Oppie as he's fondly called , once he realises he has paved the way for the end of humanity. He fittingly quotes from our own Bhagwad Geeta , "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds!"
He's subjugated for having admiration towards communism just like Charlie Chaplin was.
The father of the atom bomb is accused of selling secrets to communists and thus is stripped naked and is humiliated.
If you try to find a Nolan in the film , you may not and that is the beauty of 'Oppenheimer'. The only similar you can find here is his effort to define a problem and then solve it. All of his movies do that.
Cilian Murphy is a befitting choice to play the protagonist with his portrayal of the eccentric Oppenheimer. Emily Blunt is superb as Kitty with a pizzazz. A delightful performance is given by Rober Downey Jr. , where he has abandoned his super hero persona to play a robust political character. Matt Damon comes off as a stronger character with an edge and there are others like Rami Maleck used as a commodity.
It is art like this which makes you fall in love with cinema all over again!
